On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, members and guests of the Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch gathered at The Lakemba Club’s auditorium to honour and remember those who served in battle, as well as those who continue to serve today.

Wreaths were laid by Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch President Ann Garland OAM, Deputy Mayor of Canterbury Bankstown Karl Saleh OAM, Canterbury League Club President Peter Winchester, Lakemba Services Social Club Vice President Keith Lotty and Embassy Church Reverend Ken Fischer.

Mrs Garland recited the Ode of Remembrance and Reverend Fischer led The Lord’s Prayer. After the service, a light lunch and refreshments were served.

“I would like to mention and say thanks to Peter Evangelidis from Holy Spirit Catholic College Lakemba,” said Chris Taylor, The Lakemba Club Venue Manager. “He was granted permission to take the day off school in order to attend our Remembrance Day service, deliver a reading, and lay a wreath.”

To show their support, members, guests, and staff wore red poppies and sprigs of rosemary, traditional symbols of remembrance for those who served. The red poppy has become synonymous with the end of World War I.

“The Lakemba RSL Sub-Branch Remembrance Day service is an opportunity to remember and show respect for those who sacrificed their lives or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations,” said Mr Taylor. “We pay tribute to those who served, those who continue to serve, and those who gave their lives to protect our nation. We will remember them. Lest we forget.”
