Senior shuffleboard encourages community bonding

In a bid to increase senior participation rates in recreational and healthy community activities, a shuffleboard was recently installed at The Lakemba Club for the enjoyment of Members and guests.

Shuffleboard enthusiast and Bulldog Legend, Steve Mortimer, has been running tutorials for staff and Members to introduce and teach the finer details of the game.

Jenny is a familiar face around The Lakemba Club after having worked there for over seven years, first behind the now defunct Lakemba bistro counter and currently as a café attendant.  

What’s the best thing about working in Lakemba?

I love the atmosphere of the club; it’s small enough that everyone knows everybody and gives it that really friendly vibe. I also enjoy working with other staff members, we are like one big family.

Two dozen organisations are big winners in ClubGRANTS 2015

24 local organisations have just received a very large injection of funds – $298,312 worth of grants to be exact – from Canterbury League Club through their ClubGRANTS program.

Each recipient organisation received funding to run specific health and social welfare programs that assist different groups in need within the local community including family support, aged, disability, and early childhood and youth services.

Backgammon club welcomes new members

Aris Patikas, President of the Canterbury League Backgammon Club, was just a 7 year old boy watching his uncles play when he fell in love with the game too.

That was over 70 years ago – his passion for the ancient game of backgammon has not diminished and the sprightly senior can still be seen playing against other club members when they meet up for games and tournaments.

Canterbury produces dawn service program

On behalf of the Anzac Dawn Service Trust Inc and to honour the 100th year of the Gallipoli Landing, Canterbury produced 20,000 copies of the commemorative Anzac Day Dawn Service ‘Order of Service’ booklets that were handed out at this year’s service at Martin Place.

Asides from the Order of Service, the booklet also lists the history behind the Gallipoli Landing as well as the founding of the original Sydney Dawn Service back in 1927.

This year’s Anzac Day Dawn Service at The Lakemba Club was a special one, commemorating the 100 years since the Landing of Gallipolli.

Over 100 people gathered at the Club at 7am for the march to the Lakemba Cenotaph. The half hour service was led by Father Gary Rawson of St Therese Church and Father Graeme Watkins of Uniting Church at Lakemba.

New ANZAC centenary plaque unveiled at Lakemba

In the lead up to Anzac Day, Member for Watson Tony Burke presented The Lakemba Club with a new commemorative plaque to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service during the wars.

“In World War One, like so many of the conflicts that followed, locals who lost their lives in conflict were buried in the field. These memorials were the only dedicated sites where family members and loved ones could leave flowers, reflect and pray. They hold a special place in the nation’s memory and every generation needs to treat them with special care,” said Tony Burke.
